Thousands of Egyptians are celebrating the forced resignation of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Their collective sense of euphoria, however, is soon to subside as the reality of Mubarak's resignation becomes apparent. Rather than the transition to democracy that the protesters may have hoped for, Egypt's immediate future will be one of military government, and most likely the application of martial law once the army begins to urge people to return home. While the celebrations continue in the streets, members of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces are debating the future of the country. The members of this council are less concerned about holding fresh elections and a transition to democratic governance than they are about preserving the current regime, albeit with some cosmetic adjustments.
