Summary
A recent debt default and dwindling monetary reserves will require Argentina to exploit newfound energy resources. The successful development of shale oil and natural gas resources would ease stress on the treasury and reduce the country's dependence on energy imports, particularly of natural gas. To succeed, however, the central government and the outlying provinces must align their interests and agree on a regulatory framework. The future of the economy is at stake, but a compromise may be on the horizon.
