Austria: After Elections, Euroskeptic Parties Gain a Foothold in Government

As expected, Austria's general elections revealed the popularity of Euroskeptic parties in the country. The center-right Austrian People's Party (OVP) won parliamentary elections on Oct. 15 with 31 percent of the vote, according to projections on Oct. 16. The center-left Social Democratic Party (SPO) and the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) are neck and neck for the second place, at 26.9 percent and 26 percent respectively. (Almost 900,000 postal ballots remain uncounted.) The OVP will soon have to start negotiations to form a coalition government with another party....
