China: Copycat Attacks and Social Unrest

Summary

A farmer took a hammer to five kindergarten students and a teacher April 30 in China's Shandong province, the latest in a string of apparent "copycat" assaults on primary schools in China. STRATFOR expects to see more in the near future, as other impressionable and angry people seek to air their grievances in dramatic ways. China began a one-child policy in 1982, which resulted in a large number of families intently focused on protecting their only children, and Beijing will be quick to respond to the latest attacks with enhanced school security.

A string of assaults on primary schools have been alarming, but they are not likely to cause any widespread public protests....
