Danger Looms for Ukraine's Security Forces Despite Early Success

Summary

Despite the apparent success of Ukrainian operations to retake an airfield in eastern Ukraine that was under occupation by pro-Russian activists, there are several worrying signs for Kiev and its security forces. Armed pro-Russian groups are still entrenched across the region and continue to occupy buildings in nearly a dozen eastern Ukrainian cities. More concerning for Ukraine's government is that the Russian military remains on alert, with nearly 40,000 troops ready for rapid mobilization along the border with eastern Ukraine.

In many ways, yesterday's raid to retake Kramatorsk airfield was the easiest part of the operation to pacify the unrest in eastern Ukraine....
