The EU Parliamentary Elections Have National-Level Repercussions

Summary

The current elections for the EU Parliament, which began May 22 and will end May 25, will have political repercussions at the national level in many countries. After the elections, France and Italy will see their center-left governments try to apply fiscal and administrative reforms while dealing with increasingly rebellious factions within the ruling parties. In the United Kingdom, the government will face growing Euroskepticism from the opposition and some sectors of the ruling party while dealing with the issue of Scottish independence. In Greece and Belgium, the elections for the EU Parliament will coincide with important municipal, regional and national elections that could lead to political instability.

The vote is typically less about EU-level representation and more about opinions of incumbent national governments....
