Summary

In the wake of Ireland's "no" vote on the Lisbon Treaty referendum June 12, the European Union is undergoing an institutional crisis. Though EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said June 16 that there is no direct link between the Irish vote and EU enlargement, Brussels will be too busy handling the EU's existential crisis to focus on expansion efforts.
