Summary

The success of various branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in the wake of the Arab Spring has created an opportunity for Hamas to break out of its international political isolation. But that success has also widened internal splits within the Palestinian Islamist movement. These divisions will complicate Hamas' efforts to reconcile its long-term goal of a sovereign Palestinian state and its governance of a subnational entity.

To restore its legitimacy, the Palestinian movement is trying to benefit from the success of Islamists elsewhere....
