Japan Post's privatization kicked off Oct. 1, three years after former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's government first gave the go-ahead for its reform. Despite the dramatic proposed breakup, Tokyo has no intention of losing de facto control of Japan Post's $2.6 trillion in assets, which never stray far from funding Japan's continually rising debt.
