Libya: Human Traffickers Are Driven Out of a City, Not Out of Business

As the war in Libya drags on, control over the country's cities continues to change hands between militias. After several weeks of fighting, the Anti-Islamic State Operations Room (AIOR) said it has taken full control of the city of Sabratha from the control of various militia groups. These militia groups, which include al-Dabashi Brigade, the Abu Brigade and the 48th Battalion militia, have long been involved in human trafficking and moving refugees. Despite the best efforts of European countries in general and Italy in particular, people continue to be smuggled from Libya into Europe. The Italian strategy has partially relied on assistance from local actors, and the Italian government reportedly negotiated directly with the militias just driven out of Sabratha to counter refugee movements....
