Summary
The United Kingdom is close to appointing a new leader. Home Secretary Theresa May is poised to become head of the Conservative Party and the country's next prime minister following the July 11 announcement by Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom that she is pulling out of the contest to replace Prime Minister David Cameron. After Leadsom's announcement, Cameron said he would offer his resignation July 13, clearing the way for May's ascension. Though the development eliminates one source of uncertainty in the United Kingdom, the country will continue to feel the political and economic consequences of the June 23 Brexit referendum.
