Summary
Anti-government demonstrations in Bahrain that began Sept. 21 are expected to continue until early October. Shiite opposition groups, which had remained relatively quiet in the six months since Saudi-led Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) troops were deployed to Bahrain to crack down on protests, are now organizing large demonstrations in the hopes of recapturing the momentum they gained in March. Bahraini and GCC security forces are better prepared for the protesters, but another crackdown could engender further Shiite unrest that could spread to other countries. This, in turn, could play to the advantage of a strengthening Iran.
