Russia: Filling a U.S. Gap in Manned Space Flight

Summary

With the current plan to retire the U.S. space shuttle in 2010, NASA will have a gap of about five years where it will not have the capability to put human beings in orbit. Russia is really the only country in the world with the proven design and infrastructure for practically putting humans in space on a sustained basis while this gap exists.
