South Africa: The President's New Plan for Public Utilities Could Cost Him Politically

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced late Feb. 7 that his government would split Eskom, the country's state-owned electricity utility, into three separate entities under a single holding company. The three entities will cover power generation, distribution and transmission. The president also said the government would step in to help the company manage its ballooning debts, and it has been suggested that further information would be provided during an upcoming budget speech. Details, however, were not forthcoming on the government's future financial support for the company, which has struggled to balance its books in recent years....
