Ukraine: Saakashvili Protests Are the Sideshow to the Presidential Battle

A Dec. 10 protest calling for the release of Ukrainian anti-corruption leader Mikhail Saakashvili is actually a sideshow to the real battle between President Petro Poroshenko and former Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko, who are neck and neck in the polls for the 2019 presidential election. Security forces detained Saakashvili, the former governor of Odessa, on Dec. 8; he said the charges against him were trumped up to undermine his drive against Poroshenko. On Dec. 9, Timoshenko called on the president to free Saakashvili and reminded him how protests had brought down President Viktor Yanukovich in 2013-14....
