Summary

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Oct. 9 that Washington is open to reconciliation with the Taliban if it meant an end to the war in Afghanistan. Such a reconciliation would indeed indicate the beginning of the end of the fighting in Afghanistan, but a settlement will not be possible without Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
