Turkey: Opposition Candidate Wins Istanbul Mayoral Elections
Opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate Ekrem Imamoglu won the initial round of voting in Istanbul's mayoral election after the Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate, Binali Yildirim, conceded to him, Hurriyet reported June 23. The initial results indicate that Imamoglu captured 54.01 percent of the vote to Yildirim's 45.10 percent.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on June 18 that the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate for mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, could be barred from taking office should he win election on June 23 if he fails to apologize to the governor of Ordu province, who has accused Imamoglu of calling him a dog, Ahval reported.
