Islamic State leader for Afghanistan and Pakistan Hafiz Saeed Khan was killed July 26 in a U.S. drone strike carried out in Kot district of Afghanistan's Nangharhar province, the Pentagon said Aug. 13, Reuters reported. Khan's death has been falsely reported before, but Afghan Ambassador Omar Zakhilwal said he had confirmation from security forces. This follows the May killing of Afghan Taliban head Mullah Akhtar Mansoor in another drone strike. Khan, a former commander of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, was appointed to lead the Khorasan unit of the Islamic State in January 2015. Khan was from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan.
