Algeria: Authorities Consult With U.S., France

Algerian authorities held overnight talks with the United States and France over whether international forces could help against militants who kidnapped workers at an Algerian energy facility, AP reported Jan. 17, citing an unnamed official. Algerian officials also contacted tribal elders among Algerian Tuaregs, hoping they could help negotiate an end to the standoff, the official said. It is unclear right now the degree to which the situation is related to France's intervention in Mali.
