Australia: Prime Minister To Visit Washington, Discuss Indo-Pacific Infrastructure

The United States, Australia, Japan and India are considering a regional infrastructure program that would be an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative, Australian Financial Review reported Feb. 18, citing an unnamed senior U.S. official. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is traveling with a delegation this week to Washington, D.C., where he is expected to discuss the infrastructure idea with U.S. President Donald Trump, along with China's presence in the South China Sea and North Korea. As Australia considers its economy and role in the Indo-Pacific region, it has been reticent to join in with Chinese investment via the Belt and Road Initiative.
