Brazil: Former President Temer Arrested

What Happened: Brazilian authorities have arrested former President Michel Temer as part of an ongoing corruption probe, the BBC reported March 21.

Why It Matters: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been promising to implement a much stronger anti-corruption policy and has appointed former judge Sergio Moro as the country's new justice and public security minister. Moro has overseen the prosecution of individuals involved in the Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) corruption scandal.

Background: Temer served as president from 2016 to 2018 and replaced Dilma Rousseff, who was removed from office as the result of an impeachment proceeding.
