What Happened: The Brazilian government has submitted a series of economic reform bills to Congress to give the government greater authority over public spending and address the budget deficit, Bloomberg reported Nov. 5.

Why It Matters: The proposals are an important part of the Brazilian government's plans to rein in public spending after lawmakers already passed a long-anticipated pension reform bill last month. However, the latest reform bills lack the widespread support the pension reform enjoyed, and legislators will likely push back against some of the proposals.

Background: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been promising to reform the country's public spending and federal budget, roughly 90 percent of which consists of mandatory expenses.
