Central African Republic: Rebel Coalition Takes Over Mining Town

A coalition of rebel groups in the Central African Republic on Dec. 18 took over the city of Bria, a hub of the country's diamond-mining region, an unnamed military source said, SAPA-AFP reported. Troops at a military base in the city attempted to resist but quickly retreated, the source said. The fall of Bria comes after a series of recent attacks on northern and central towns in the country. On Dec. 17, the rebels — known as the Seleka coalition of three dissident groups — threatened to overthrow the Central African government.
