China: Beijing Tells Vietnam To Halt Oil Exploration

China told Vietnam on Dec. 6 to stop unilateral oil exploration in disputed areas of the South China Sea and to not harass Chinese fishing boats, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said, Reuters reported. The spokesman said Vietnam expelled Chinese fishing vessels from waters near China's Hainan province following a Nov. 30 incident in which Vietnam says two Chinese fishing ships cut a seismic cable that was being pulled by a Vietnamese ship. Vietnam's description of the incident, which occurred in waters disputed by the two countries, is inconsistent with the facts, the spokesman said.
