China: More Than 40 Percent Of Arable Land Degraded

More than 40 percent of China's arable land is degraded, causing concern over the country's ability to produce food for its large population, official news agency Xinhua said, Reuters reported Nov. 4. According to the report, which cites agriculture ministry statistics, the soil in part of China's breadbasket is thinning while soil in the south is increasingly acidic. Beijing is growingly concerned that industrialization and resulting pollution is impacting the food supply.
