Colombia: FARC Members Approve Peace Deal

Colombia's largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), has given its approval to a peace deal with the government after nearly four years of talks, BBC reported Sept. 24. The announcement of the unanimous decision by FARC members was made at the end of the group's 10th Conference, held in the remote Yari plains region, one of the group's strongholds in southern Colombia. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez, known as Timochenko, will sign the agreement at a ceremony on Sept. 26. But the deal will only be implemented if the majority of Colombian voters approve it in a referendum on Oct. 2.
