India, Japan: Defense Ministers Agree to Increase Ties

What Happened: The defense ministers of Japan and India have agreed to begin talks on an agreement to share defense capabilities and supplies and to conduct their first joint army exercises this year, The Japan Times reported Aug. 21.

Why It Matters: Japan and India are strengthening their defense cooperation to better counter Chinese influence in the region.

Background: Japan and India are both part of an informal coalition with the United States that is designed to balance against China.
