India: U.S. Trade Representative Reportedly Drafting Partial Deal With New Delhi

What Happened: The U.S. government has reportedly directed the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to draft the text for a partial trade agreement with India, Inside U.S. Trade reported Sept. 5.

Why It Matters: If confirmed, a partial trade deal between India and the United States would reduce trade frictions between both countries after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized New Delhi's trade practices, including high import tariffs and e-commerce laws.

Background: Bilateral trade between the United States and India reached $142.1 billion in 2018 and included a $24.2 billion trade surplus for New Delhi.
