Iran: Guardian Council Approves Some Presidential Candidates, Sources Say

Current Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Ebrahim Raisi, Mohammed Qalibaf, Mostafa Hashemitaba, Eshaq Jahangiri, Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf and Mostafa Mir Salim have been approved by the Guardian Council to run in Iran's presidential election, Tasnim and ISNA reported April 20, citing sources. Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, however, was disqualified, according to state media. An official list will be announced in the coming days, after the Guardian Council finishes the vetting process and reviewing the appeals of disqualified candidates. Many potential candidates who submitted their credentials for approval are part of a new generation of politicians and have been vying for influence over Iran's future, but the Guardian Council holds the institutional control to bar access to running in the presidential election.
