Iraq: High-Profile Sources Blame U.S., Israel for Explosion at Arms Depot

What Happened: Several high-profile Iraqi sources have blamed either Israel or the United States for an Aug. 12 explosion at an arms depot south of Baghdad, The Times of Israel reported Aug. 14.

Why It Matters: Iraqi officials likely blamed the United States and Israel for the explosion to gain public standing or shore up political support. However, if pressure on the Iraqi government increases to prevent future incidents at military facilities, it could severely affect ties with the United States, regardless of whether Washington is responsible.

Background: The Aug. 12 blast injured 13 people. Meanwhile, a number of Iraqi officials also accused either Israel or the United States of conducting an airstrike against an Iranian-linked site on July 19.
