What Happened: Hamas is preparing special units for a military conflict along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, as well as plans to attack the border fence and conduct violent demonstrations, Haaretz reported Sept. 28.
Why It Matters: Hamas is working to pressure Israel by increasing the economic and political costs to the latter of not allowing aid into the Palestinian area. This strategy could speed an aid package moving through the United Nations but also increase the risk of a larger military conflict.
Background: Gaza is currently suffering under an economic crisis due to cuts to aid from the United States and the United Nations, as well as consistent economic and political pressure from Israel.
