What Happened: U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order declaring U.S. recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Haaretz reported March 25.

Why It Matters: The decision is a reversal of decadeslong U.S. policy toward the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967. Washington had previously only recognized border changes that states have either mutually agreed upon or that are the results of civil war.

Background: While the Israeli government has been using the Golan Heights as a bargaining chip to gain a peace treaty with Syria as recently as 2010, Iran's growing influence in Damascus has led Israel to lobby for permanent recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.
