Japan: Coast Guard Arrests Chinese Fisherman

The Japanese coast guard arrested the captain of a Chinese fishing boat Feb. 2 about 45 kilometers (28 miles) northeast of the Miyako Islands, AFP reported. The boat's crew of 13 was stopped on suspicion of fishing in Japan's exclusive economic zone. In the midst of multiple island disputes, Japan has been asserting its maritime capabilities as it seeks out new investment opportunities in its near abroad, focusing much of its attention on securing its southern sea-lanes.
