Macedonia: Government Optimistic Over Resolving Name Dispute

U.N. mediator Matthew Nimetz is in Macedonia to resume talks between Athens and Skopje regarding the longstanding Macedonia name dispute, EU Observer reported Feb. 1. A Macedonian government spokesperson, Mile Boshnjakovski, said he is certain Greece’s far-right groups will not hinder the negotiations. Boshnjakovski also expressed optimism regarding his country joining NATO, which Greece has blocked in the past over the name dispute. If the two countries find a resolution, NATO could invite Macedonia to join in July, and the European Union could begin accession talks after April.
