Mali: Overnight Battles Take Place Around Konna

Clashes overnight Jan. 16 between the Malian army, backed by French troops, and Islamist rebels focused on the town of Konna, military sources said Jan. 17, AFP reported. A second battle took place 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) outside Konna, a source said, while an Islamist militant said the battle for control of the area was not finished. France and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb each want to protect their interests in Mali.
