Mali: Truck Bomb Kills More Than 50 Inside Military Camp

A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device ripped through a military camp in the Malian city of Gao early Jan. 18, killing more than 50 people and wounding many others, The Guardian reported. No group has so far claimed the attack, which targeted a gathering of troops and pro-government militiamen who were preparing for a joint patrol at the time of the blast. The attack appears to demonstrate good planning and intel, particularly because of the timing of the explosion. Mali's vast and unforgiving terrain, its location next to weak states, and the presence of militants make pacifying the country an arduous task.
