Mali: U.N. Security Council Approves Military Action Against Militants

The U.N. Security Council on Dec. 20 approved an operation to oust al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb from northern Mali, AP reported. The resolution stressed that there must be military and political tracks to regain control of the region. Additionally, it set benchmarks, including political progress and further military planning, before the forces can deploy. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has entrenched itself in northern Mali since March, when a military coup in Bamako triggered the collapse of the Malian army in the region.
