Nigeria: Africa's First Bird Flu Fatality

Nigerian health officials reported Feb. 1 that samples taken from a 22-year-old woman from Lagos state who died recently tested positive for bird flu. Tests on three others, including the woman's mother, a poultry farmer in Taraba state and a poultry farmer in Borno state, have so far proven inconclusive. The woman is the first confirmed human fatality from bird flu in Sub-Saharan Africa.
