Pakistan: Former Prime Minister Sharif Arrested

What Happened: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, were arrested July 13 upon their return to Lahore, Pakistan, after a trip to London, Dawn reported. 

Why It Matters: Sharif is still Pakistan's leading political figure despite being ousted as prime minister in 2017, and his return to the country is part of his strategy to galvanize his party ahead of elections on July 25. Both he and his daughter had been sentenced earlier in July to prison terms after being convicted of corruption charges.

Background: Tension between the politically powerful army and elected politicians defines Pakistani politics. Sharif's second stint as prime minister was cut short in October 1999 when he was overthrown in a military coup.
