Pakistan, Russia: Countries Sign Military Agreement Allowing Officer Training in Moscow

What Happened: Pakistani and Russian defense officials signed an agreement that will allow Pakistani military officers to train in Moscow, Voice of America reported Aug. 8.

Why It Matters: As the relationship between the United States and Pakistan deteriorates, Pakistan and Russia are exploring a closer defense partnership that gives Islamabad an alternative source of arms and diplomatic support.

Background: Russia and Pakistan signed a defense cooperation agreement in 2014 and hosted joint military exercises in 2016. This year, Moscow delivered four Mi-35M helicopters to Pakistan, as part of a $153 million deal that was included in the 2014 agreement.
