Russia: Putin Threatens to Develop Medium-Range Nuclear Missiles If U.S. Withdraws From INF Treaty

What Happened: Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to develop nuclear-armed medium-range missiles if the United States withdraws from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), CNBC reported Dec. 5.

Why It Matters: Putin's threats to not only field missiles banned by the INF but to also arm them with nuclear warheads will likely further alarm European nations.

Background: U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has given Russia 60 days to return to compliance with the INF before the United States would announce its withdrawal from the agreement. Russia has rejected the ultimatum, saying that it is already in compliance.
