Saudi Arabia: Royal Decrees Authorize Payments To Some Citizens

Under several royal decrees issued Jan. 5 by Saudi Arabia, pensioners, civil servants, students and Saudi soldiers fighting in Yemen will be eligible for allowances and bonuses paid by the state. Despite the push under the kingdom's long-term economic plan to wean its citizens away from reliance on state support, the Saudi budget for 2018 includes increases in public spending. Two of the decrees are aimed at softening the impact of the 5 percent value-added tax that was instituted with the budget: One would pay the tax for private health services and education, and the other would offset a portion of the tax for first-time homebuyers.
