Somalia: Al Shabaab Retakes Southern Town After Forces Withdraw

Al Shabaab has retaken the southern Somali town of Buulo Guduud from allied Somali-Kenyan forces, Jowhar news reported Dec. 25. A Somali army commander said the allied forces withdrew for tactical reasons from the town, located 30 kilometers (about 18 miles) from Kismayo. While most of al Shabaab's attacks are concentrated on the capital, Mogadishu, and the surrounding regions, the group's forces continue to attack outposts in and around Kismayo, Baidoa and Beled Weyne.
