Sri Lanka: President Appoints New Cabinet

What Happened: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed 28 legislators and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as Cabinet ministers, AP reported Dec. 19.

Why It Matters: The decision improves the chances for Sri Lanka to avoid a government shutdown and could provide a temporary reprieve for the country's political crisis.

Background: On Oct. 26, Sirisena abruptly dismissed Wickremesinghe as prime minister, replacing him with Mahinda Rajapaksa, who failed to secure a majority in Parliament. Sirisena then dissolved Parliament and called new elections, but Sri Lanka's Supreme Court declared the move unconstitutional.
