Syria: Fighting Continues Around Northeast Damascus

Heavy clashes are ongoing March 20 between Syrian government forces and rebel groups in northeastern Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, Reuters reported. The fighting comes after rebels and allied jihadists, including the al Qaeda-aligned Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, attacked government positions in the Jobar district on March 19. Syrian troops supported by heavy airpower and tanks launched a counterattack March 20; activists say they have counted hundreds of air and artillery strikes. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has shown itself to be one of the premier rebel factions fighting in the Syrian conflict, but its success may well be its undoing.
