Syria: IDF Denies Damascus' Claim That It Shot Down Israeli Aircraft

The Syrian military claims it shot down an Israeli fighter jet and hit another early on March 17, following Israeli airstrikes on military targets near the Syrian city of Palmyra, Haaretz and AFP reported. An Israeli military spokesman denied that any Israeli planes were damaged and said there were no Israeli casualties. According to an Israeli Defense Forces statement, several anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the Israeli jets, and one missile was shot down by Israel’s “Arrow” missile defense system, deployed north of Jerusalem. Several times in recent years, including during a Feb. 22 raid, IDF planes are believed to have targeted weapons convoys in Syria that Israel claims were headed for Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. Hezbollah has proved itself a crucial ally to Syrian President Bashar al Assad
