It is the centennial anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution and the civil war that followed — events that guided Russia's trajectory through the 20th century. It was a tumultuous period for the country, which faced the disastrous end of World War I on the Eastern Front, devastating bread shortages and factory strikes, and the dawn of the Soviet era. The period recalls an uncertain, divided time in Russian history. Deciding how best to commemorate the events of 100 years ago has been no easy task for the Kremlin, itself facing a period of strife and uncertainty. In this visual anthology, we take a look at some of the defining images of the revolution and draw parallels with today's Russia.
