Summary
Leaders from three regional trading blocs in Africa agreed Oct. 22 to move toward forming a single free trade zone comprising 26 countries whose combined gross domestic product is an estimated $624 billion. The move could lead to a slight improvement in trade efficiencies among the member countries, but is unlikely to significantly alter the trade patterns that keep Africa largely dependent on commodity exports.
