Angola Ban Could Reheat U.S.-EU Food Fight
Apr 1, 2004 | 23:59 GMT
Summary
Angola's government plans to bar imports of genetically modified (GM) food aid, effectively closing shipments from the United States, the source of three-fourths of food aid to the African country. The new policy could prompt a re-escalation of the political battle over GM food aid among Europe, the United States, African states and the United Nations that raged in 2002 and early 2003 — which was only suspended as war in Iraq commandeered international attention. At the heart of the dispute are deep differences between the United States and the European Union over agricultural biotechnology.
