In Argentina, Farmers' Feud With Government Continues

Tensions are rising between Argentine farmers and the government once again over the state's heavy involvement in the economy, and a showdown seems likely in the coming weeks. Eduardo Buzzi, a leader of one of the groups belonging to the Mesa de Enlace — a confederation of Argentina's four major agriculture groups — warned recently that farmers will take to the streets in cities throughout the country unless President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner agrees to meet with the coalition. The farmers will likely use demonstrations to steadily increase pressure on the government — for political and economic purposes — in the months leading up to Argentina's legislative elections in October. But it is unclear whether such unrest will reach a level needed to compel the government to restructure the economic system implemented by Fernandez and her late husband and predecessor, Nestor Kirchner, over the past decade.
